We spent a delightful few hours last Saturday afternoon in the company of 19 guests, including very special guest Ms Marmite Lover herself, enjoying a summer's day in the garden first for sewing (little lavender bags in the shape of houses to take home and hang around the house somewhere) followed by a vintage tea party inside at the dining table.

The menu included: finger sandwiches with cheshire cheese and homemade red onion chutney, coronation chicken and rocket, egg mayonnaise with watercress and hummus with raisins and carrot, followed by homebaked scones with clotted cream and preserves, Pimms cupcakes, Neapolitan layer cake (chocolate, strawberry and vanilla layers), chocolate-dipped strawberries and raspberry frangipane tartlets. All washed down with lashings of leaf teas and coffee. Preceded by homemade lemonade in little milk bottles with stripy straws.

Feedback from guests was wonderful.

We chose a new location this time, a really delightful village hall, complete with its own solar panels for power, in the Cheshire countryside. Just to prove that it was originally the building housing the local school, an elderly gentleman came in for a look around half way through the afternoon, he was with his daughter and they were visiting the area he grew up in. The kitchen we were serving cakes from had been his classroom!

We had a couple of stallholders join in the fun, to give an added dimension to the tea, in the form of browsing and shopping. We're fairly sure that our guests had a fine time, having been thoroughly spoiled, and were relaxed and full of delicious cake when they came to leave. It's a huge amount of work staging a secret tea party in a location outside the home, but the atmosphere was super and we'll be going back again if we can.

The menu included Hummingbird cake, lemon and blueberry cupcakes, white chocolate and raspberry brownies (these were a big hit), fruit tea loaf, not to mention some new open sandwiches with cream cheese and roasted veg.
Menu for Cake-tastic Vintage Tea Party on Sat 9 Marchtag:supperclubfangroup.ning.com,2013-03-03:4181778:BlogPost:1419622013-03-03T15:04:19.000ZVintage Afternoon Teashttp://supperclubfangroup.ning.com/profile/GwynethBrock

Guests first made a brooch with vintage fabrics and buttons with help from Jo Johnston, then moved onto the tea table for afternoon tea to be served. Lots of chatter and enjoyment around the craft table, then munching. Was a good, productive afternoon and we'll definitely do it again. Normally for my secret vintage tea parties I just provide a huge afternoon tea, which takes two hours in itself, this took a little longer with the crafting and was slightly less sumptuous a feast but I think we provided really good value at only £20 a head, might have to tweak that pricing a little for future events.

Secondly, in a nod towards Christmas, a chocolate orange cake. Two layers of moist chocolate cake decorated with whipped orange frosting and Terry's chocolate orange segments (chef's children desperately hoping there'll be a few leftovers).

And finally something terribly traditional, this is afternoon tea after all. Light as a feather bakewell tarts, with sweet pastry, raspberry jam and frangipane filling, sprinkled with flaked almonds and baked until golden brown.

All in addition to lashings of delicious leaf tea, freshly made and delicious finger sandwiches, savoury tartlets and fluffy homemade scones with clotted cream and an eclectic selection of jams.

Not to mention the good company, pretty china, crisp vintage table linens and beamed farmhouse dining room. It's like come dine with me, but absolutely no marks out of 10 or looks around the bedroom!

A few places still left but book soon.

Sixteen tea-lovers this time, which necessitated an extra table and in the wrong room, because my 5 year old son decided he didn't want me to dismantle his army of toy soldiers which has taken weeks to set up, move, battle, regroup, you can imagine the scenario. So two tables next to each other in the dining room, one for ten, one for six, not too squashed although close enough for the tables to swap cakes when they needed, which was handy.

Sunday's menu is produced below. I'm continuously searching out more local produce so this time, along with delicious thick sliced cooked ham from the Cheshire Smokehouse and my own red onion chutney, I made some little tartlets with Burts Blue Cheese. Burts Blue is handmade nearby by cheesemaker Claire Burt who I met on her stall at Altrincham Producers Market recently, and has won a Gold medal at the international cheese awards in Nantwich. The cheese would make a delicious after dinner cheese or snack by itself on a lovely bread (Claire suggested a walnut bread) but I decided mini tarts with fig chutney (Trackleman's organic) would suit an afternoon tea better. www.burtscheese.co.uk

Although billed a "Secret Strawberry Afternoon Tea Party" I decided not to make strawberry sandwiches (!) and did offer a lemon cake and a Guinness Fruit Loaf alongside the strawberry cakes. I felt that too many strawberries might be too much of a good thing and could even detract from their deliciousness. I did buy some local Cheshire strawberries specially for the occasion and a very special pot of Strawberry Jam, handmade by Wendy Brandon preserves in Pembrokeshire which I find delicious (and is also served in the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, so I'm in good company). The blackcurrant jam was bought at the school fete last week and, although quite stiff, was special for the fact it was homemade from homegrown blackcurrants.

For drinks, one group brought their own Pimms which I thoroughly approve of as an accompaniment to a summer afternoon tea, as far as I'm concerned you just can't drink enough Pimms in summer months. My iced tea was a Delia recipe which I won't repeat: "refreshing" is a polite way of describing it. One guest advised me that she uses grape juice in hers, which sounds like an excellent idea compared to the freshly squeezed orange juice in mine which turned the tea cloudy and didn't sweeten it sufficiently for my taste.

My next tea parties will be in the autumn and I'll post the dates shortly on the supperclub website. I'm talking to a number of leaf tea suppliers with the intention of upping my tea game, I'll keep you posted!

A new afternoon tea club launches in South Manchester...

Five year old son and husband evacuated to Head over Heels play area in Chorlton, followed by digging at a friends allotment. Teenage daughter and 12 year old son hiding upstairs. My mum ready to wash up, in fact we couldn't give her the plates fast enough (she even read the Sunday papers during one lull). Friend Kate flower-arranging as guests arrived and ready to photograph proceedings, act as general scivvy, add moral support and scoff leftovers; she didn't even have time to don her pinny we kept her so busy. And me the host, in my pyjamas making sandwiches half an hour before people arrived, oops! Didn't manage much hair brushing or make-up, but I did pull a frock on and a smile takes you a long way doesn't it?!

All guests arrived promptly, apart from one friend who had a migraine and we hope is feeling much better now. And once four people were in the room there was a lovely hum of chatter and sipping of home-made lemonade, so much so that I could rush back into the kitchen and finish off some last-minute plating up. Sandwiches and mini tarlets served first, tea orders taken, then happy munching and chit-chat. I try to use local ingredients and our ham is sourced from the Cheshire Smokehouse in nearby Wilmslow. Lancashire Cheese and home-made red onion chutney is another favourite local ingredient. Lots of oohs and aahs as the cake stands were carried in, very gratifying after all the love and care put into baking it all. The menu's below, but favourites with guests seemed to be the bright pink macaroons with raspberry and white chocolate ganache filling, they're certainly pretty and taste very much of fresh raspberries.

Very politely, just before 4pm, guests started to make moves to leave and we offered a slice of cake to everyone to take away (the other option being me and the family eating all the leftovers which just isn't healthy!!). As guests left and cakes were cleared into the kitchen my children appeared as if by magic to "help" eat some of the scones and cakes, they're very good at that kind of helping.

Lovely messages from guests later, as clearing away continued, and a fabulous blog entry:

It's Manchester's very first secret afternoon tea club and what better day than our one-off royal wedding bank holiday, 29th April 2-4pm. We're aiming to please everyone, whether you've watched "the wedding" or whether you're escaping "the wedding". So don't expect street party style bunting. Do expect a picture-perfect table laid with vintage tablecloths, china, cutlery and cake stands. Don't expect wall to wall TV coverage on in the corner of the room. Do expect delectable finger sandwiches, fluffy fresh scones with jam and clotted cream, pretty french macarons and a huge chocolate layer cake. We can't wait to welcome you to our 18th century former farmhouse in South Manchester. If the weather's fine, we'll take a turn in the garden or even loll on blankets on the grass to let the tea and cake go down. Come with a friend or come and make friends.
