I have very sadly had to cancel my Afternoon Tea on 11th August. After an initial lot of interest locally, nobody actually booked.

Devon seems to lack secret foodies in general. There is only one other genuine (i.e not a restaurant), club in Devon and it is right near the city of Exeter.

I had lots of lovely tweets and interest but everyone too far away. Locally there are teashops on almost every street corner at less than the £10 I was charging but offering nothing like the menu I have. Getting people to appreciate local and home-made and the ambience offered by the location I have to use is proving hard.

Never mind. I'm very sad about it but giving up is not an option. Establishing anything new in an area that has never used such a facility before is going to be hard work. I'll set up a date late Sep and am thinking of a harvest themed tea. If nobody comes then i'll try again in October. I could change to a traditional menu but that isn't me, everywhere offers basic scones, jam and cream. I want to offer a more unique experience with new tastes and new combinations.

I am setting myself a limit of six months. If in that time I still have no bookings then I need to accept that i'm doing something very wrong or people down here are just not ready for me ;)

Off to console myself with baking cake instead. I'm off to a Clandestine Cake Meeting in the week so am experimenting. Nothing beats the blues like a good bit of baking.
Hidden Tearoomtag:supperclubfangroup.ning.com,2012-06-10:4181778:BlogPost:1157152012-06-10T20:15:35.000ZHidden Tearoomhttp://supperclubfangroup.ning.com/profile/RDB1

I am The Intrepid Tart and this blog is here for you to share my journey into the underground world of lavish lunches, awesome afternoon teas and salacious secret suppers.

Running my own secret supper club is something I have always longed to do but never had the house worthy of visitors. Trying to eat scrumptious food whilst surrounded by lego, overly-enthusiastic children and the odd cat probably doesn’t make for a relaxing dining experience. Memorable maybe but not for the correct reasons!

My collection of vintage crockery and glassware is longing to be appreciated and a love of everything quirky will ensure my guests have a few random surprises along the way.

Why The Intrepid Tart? Several very good reasons.

I am brave (or stupid) enough to make tarts of all shapes and flavours. Everything from vanilla & maple custard to extra mature cheddar with marmite pastry; I have made them all.

I just liked the name. I flirt with food on a regular basis, if food types were men then i’d be atrociously badly behaved and incapable of monogamy.

It made me smile. Smiling is good.

I must thank here MsMarmite from http://supperclubfangroup.ning.com/ as without her website and book I would not be as intrepid as my username suggests. I find her work inspirational and am very proud that the UK has such a strong advocate of genuine secret suppers; not restaurants or people holding secretive suppers in restaurants but good home cooks having an avenue to showcase just what they can do. Networking for local consumers, producers and creative cooks. Take a peek. You wont regret it.

And so the adventure begins.tag:supperclubfangroup.ning.com,2012-06-09:4181778:BlogPost:1153812012-06-09T16:33:34.000ZHidden Tearoomhttp://supperclubfangroup.ning.com/profile/RDB1

After much consideration and lots of daydreaming, my addled little brain has decided that my love for cooking and quirky things has got to have an avenue on which to unleash itself.

The wedding is over and the china all lovingly packed away, the glassware went kicking and screaming back into storage boxes and the gorgeous little vases and chalkboards cried pitifully at the thought of being banished forever to the back of the garage. My cake stand did slightly better as it knew the stunning original victorian mahogany box was there to comfort it until next time but, when is next time?

Thankfully the cake tins can breathe a sigh of relief that they are not getting lost in the back of the kitchen cupboard, the cream horn moulds and English madeline moulds are not going to die of rust. With the help of a village hall and / or holiday cottage then they shall all go to the ball once more. Hurrah.

At long last the passion for detail and flair for flavoursome cooking can be lavished upon an unsuspecting public via the avenue of a secret tea party club and possibly a supper club too if I feel brave. Now, I have the crockery, the culinary ability and unfathomable enthusiasm. All I need is a venue and the concentration to work out a menu thus not feeding people to death. Death by Afternoon Tea doesn't sound a bad thing.

Oh and I need a name. This is the subject of much debate. The Tea Set? Perhaps. The Quirky Cook? A bit bratty. Devon Dumlings? Makes me sound like a small round red-faced stew monster. Oh dead. Back to the drawing board.
