Event Description

How has massive social change happened historically and what can we learn?

Where: The Hub, Angel Islington
When: 7 for 7.30pm on April 20th

The West Lexham team invite you to the first in the Next Big Shift dinner series exploring the history of how the major social changes in our society have come about.

The following dinners will explore how we can make changes through grass roots efforts, then how top down change can be harnessed. Expect expert speakers, world cafe debates and discussions all set amongst a reflective dinner by the Rambling Restaurant. We will then take all the learnings, discussions and much, much more to map out a blue print for the next big shift at a weekend at West Lexham (17-19th June - save the date).

Speakers for 1st Dinner - Wednesday 20th April:

Rakim Brooks - a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, specialising in the US Civil Rights Movement reflecting on the lessons learnt from the great movers and shakers and how to apply them today.

Polly Higgins - renowned barrister turned United Nations environmental campaigner, will shed light on the corridors of power where the big decisions are made.

Speakers for 2nd Dinner - Wednesday 11th May - exploring the way that individuals and community groups have taken matters into their own hands and started movements:

Tamsin Omond - from Climate Rush and Plane Stupid, an activist and campaigner and expert on the suffragette movement.
Tessy Britton - from the RSA, author of 'Handmade' a book documenting projects starting movements across the UK and US; and founder of the Travelling Pantry.

Joss Garman - co-founder of Plane Stupid, Greenpeace campaigner and movement strategist reflecting on a lifetime of campaigning.

Speakers for 3rd Dinner - Wednesday 25th May - the penultimate event in the Next Big Shift dinner series exploring who really has the power to make a difference. We will then take all the learnings and much, much more to map out a blue print for the next big shift at a weekend at West Lexham (17-19th June - save the date!):

Pete Betts CBE - Director of international climate change at DECC and a lead EU negotitor at the United Nations, will talk about his experience working for governments and how policy and agreements from the top can create change.

Charlotte Millar - Head of change strategy at WWF and co-convenor of the Finance Lab, will share her expertise on systemic change strategies and how a new approach to change can bring together the bottom up and top down.

Tickets - £22 including a 2 course dinner, or £60 for all three dinners. Tickets available here: http://thenextbigshift.eventbrite.com/

Future Events and culmination weekend: www.westlexham.org - a rural hub and experimental educational centre
