Find a Supper Club

Find out where and when is your local underground restaurant/pop up/supper club

Hola a todos from Morelia, Mexico!

I've finally decided to leave the desk job and got a space good enough for 14 diners (12 would be much more comfortable)...because of the size of the kitchen, I find it impossible to run a small restaurant so the idea of a Supper Club seemed much suitable and hope the concept will catch up since it doesn't seem to be that common at all in Mexico...I've found those who've traveled have heard about it and I've only met 2 who have actually attended a SC dinner abroad..people still don't understand what I'm trying to set up yet are curious and others just say it's not going to work..it's a cultural thing, I guess..my hometown is not exactly a big city (it's still a city, though) and people here would just find it weird to pay for dinner at someone's home so I'm also focusing on setting up the place as if you were in a tiny bistro yet still include some touches to make the place feel homey..

I never had the opportunity to get a Culinary Education but consider myself a foodie and since the last 6 years have focused my travels on food...I just got back from a 5-month trip traveling all around South East Asia and S. Korea and went to at least 10 Cooking Schools and attended around 30 classes as well as being invited by locals to their kitchens which will be the high-light of this trip...I'm no expert in the kitchen but I do think some of my dishes (as well as friends and family) are quite good..I'm half Asian so Fish Sauce, Shrimp Paste, Sweet Soy Sauce, Sweet Chili Sauce, etc, etc, are just basic ingredients you'll find in my cupboards (although very hard to find here) yet to others are considered smelly, exotic, bizarre stuff that probably expired years ago..you won't find any decent Asian restaurants in this city so it'll be something I can take advantage of..together with my brother and 2 friends, I also have a cousin who'll be graduating as a Chef in a couple of weeks and has decided to join us in this adventure so we'll definitely be offering more options..

I still haven't bought Kerstin's book but hoping to get a copy as soon as I go to the States...or maybe just order it from Kindle and download it on my iPad (not a big fan of e-Books)..I've already read Garbee's "Secret Suppers.." but felt I couldn't relate to the concept...the dinners mentioned sounded so exclusive and $$$...

Anyways, I hope to be an active member on this site and looking forward on learning a lot from all of you..

Hasta Pronto!

Hi Paulo,

I rather agree with you about Garbee's Secret Suppers. Not her fault but I think the supper clubs she covered were rather expensive and exclusive.

We still don't have any decent Mexican food in the UK although it's improving. It's one of my favourite cuisines and I spent a couple of months there. I reckon my salsa is pretty damn good.

If you find out about any home restaurants/supper clubs in Mexico please let us know!

Welcome to the site...

Thanks Kerstin..

I already got your book!...couldn't wait any longer so got the eBook on Amazon and looking forward not only to a good read but to learn and apply any suggestions and ideas to what we're trying to achieve...I'm sure it will be a great tool and still plan on getting a hardcover copy for our book case..

I've only heard about a few Pop-ups in Mexico City and very much in the same fashion as Garbee's dinners but nothing on SC's...that's kind of why we thought of giving it a try..we certainly have no purpose on trying to start a movement or anything but it would be great if there were more SC's to go to since our dining options are quite limited in our hometown..we're hoping to do something different where friends and family (and their friends and family) can have a good time and enjoy a good meal at a decent price...yes, Mexican food is amazing but doesn't share the same popularity worldwide as Thai or Italian Cuisine..I do know there are already a couple of institutions and groups who are already promoting our culinary culture in several countries (I've participated in a few, actually)...who know's? we might end up doing a Mexican SC at your place someday (not a bad idea, ey?)..

on an other note, I got a couple of boxes of Mini Moo cards and a box of postcards just last month using the pics we took on our food trip and have been handing them out to everyone just to make some noise and they've been a huge hit!..I'll post some pics here once we organize our first SC (hopefully in 2 weeks!)..

Saludos and thanks again!

Paulo
