Some of you may know that I went back to China for a few weeks… to do what the professionals call ‘food research’. I’d call it ‘pigging out’.
My ‘research’ included visiting local family run restaurants (away from the chains which have started to spring up in China), soaking in the atmosphere in Beijing’s street markets and visiting my auntie to retrieve some family recipes.
Putting all that ‘research’ to good use, we’ll be serving some of my family’s favourite food for our next Mama Lan dinner on Friday 22nd July (As weekdays are easier for everyone to travel on public transport, we're going to try a Friday dinner this time).
My personal favourites are Beijing five spiced meatballs and my auntie’s stuffed pancakes. My auntie’s pancakes are legendary. She’s been making these for over 40 years and they’re even better than my mum’s! I was lucky enough to spend a few days with her where she taught me all her secrets… hopefully I can make her proud.
