Mama Lans - Dedication to my granddad's mobile food store in Beijing - Sold Out at Cricklewood

August 12, 2011 from 7:30pm to 11pm
My late granddad used to run a mobile food store with my mum back in the days on the streets of Beijing.  When I was going through some family albums I remembered my granddad used to make Lan Longs for us during busy preparation for his market stall.  They are basically rolls buns layered with meat and vegetable stuffing. I haven't had them for years but while looking at these albums the memories of the soft texture and fragrance of the rolls came rushing back. If you're interested in seeing…See More

Dedication to my granddad's mobile food store in Beijing

Taking further inspiration from my 'food research trip' back to Beijing, I've decided to dedicate our next Mama Lan dinner on Friday 12th August to my late granddad. For those of you that don't know, the story of 'Mama Lans' extends to more than just the supper club but back to a time just after the revolutionary period in China where my granddad and mum used to run a mobile food stall in the streets of Beijing.   The store was so popular that it was not unusual to see people jumping off the…See More

Mama Lan's making her family's favourite food at Cricklewood

July 22, 2011 from 7:30pm to 11pm
Some of you may know that I went back to China for a few weeks… to do what the professionals call ‘food research’.  I’d call it ‘pigging out’.  My ‘research’ included visiting local family run restaurants (away from the chains which have started to spring up in China),  soaking in the atmosphere in Beijing’s street markets and visiting my auntie to retrieve some family recipes.  Putting all that ‘research’ to good use, we’ll be serving some of my family’s favourite food for our next Mama Lan…See More

Chinese hand rolled noodles vs Italian pasta and a french chocolate tart...

Thankfully the weather last Saturday held up so we were able to serve my mum’s Beijing hand rolled noodles with cold aubergine and tomato topping.  It seemed to go down a treat in the hot weather as did the watermelon and cucumber mocktail served on the night. As you guys know, we always demonstrate how to make the main dish of the evening and invite our guests to have a go.  As techniques go, rolling out dough may seem harmless enough but it was perhaps the most difficult technique we have…See More

Unexpected guest!

We had a bit a shock last Saturday as none other than Master Chef finalist, Sara Danesin Medio, popped around to our humble little supper club for dinner! When I recognised her, all I could hear in my head was the Master Chef voice over mantra of "Cooking doesn't get tougher than this"  I needn't have worried though as Sara, like all our guests, was a complete joy, she even got stuck in making to boazi with our own resident Master Chef, Mama Lan - aka my mum! …See More

Hello!

I’m sorry about the random email…but I’d like to invite you, as a fellow foodie to my first supper club event!

This Wednesday 23 February, in Kensington London, I’ll be cooking for the heart as well as belly with four exotic courses of Indian food. My kitchen is all about, fresh, organic and generous portions of honest home cooked Indian food J

It would be great if you and your friends would join us… the best part is, you’re the judge! You can pay as much or as little as you want –  let the food speak for itself!

You can see the evenings menu and my recipes by visiting me on Facebookhttp://www.facebook.com/daddysindian or on Supper Club Fan Grouphttp://supperclubfangroup.ning.com/events/daddys-indian-supper-club.

I look forward to seeing you this week! Don’t forget to book your place by emaildaddysindian@gmail.com or call me on 07580 756 775 .

Keep cooking,

Daddy
