Hi Guys,
I’ve finally got around to organising our next Mama Lan dinner which will be on the 25th June. This time we’ll be cooking dishes from ‘Cow Street’ in Beijing.
Cow street is an amazing market street in West Beijing specialising in Muslim snacks. The most famous being sesame lamb buns, which all Beijingers (Muslim or not) queue up for at lunch time!
See the events page for full details for full details of the…

Thankfully the weather last Saturday held up so we were able to serve my mum’s Beijing hand rolled noodles with cold aubergine and tomato topping. It seemed to go down a treat in the hot weather as did the watermelon and cucumber mocktail served on the night.
As you guys know, we always demonstrate how to make the main dish of the evening and invite our guests to have a go. As techniques go, rolling out dough may seem harmless enough but it was perhaps the most difficult…

We had a bit a shock last Saturday as none other than Master Chef finalist, Sara Danesin Medio, popped around to our humble little supper club for dinner!
When I recognised her, all I could hear in my head was the Master Chef voice over mantra of "Cooking doesn't get tougher than this"
I needn't have worried though as Sara, like all our guests, was a complete joy, she even got stuck in making to boazi with our own resident Master Chef, Mama Lan - aka my…

Wow, what a week it has been!
After keeping the Mama Lan supper club away from my work colleagues, I finally let them in on the secret that I have been moonlighting as a cook during my weekends for the past year.
The news spread like wildfire around the office and so I decided to tell my boss before he heard it on the grapevine.
Now, given that I worked in a very professional Private Equity house – I was worried that my boss would think I was being distracted from…

At long last, the BF finally succeed in making some half decent macaroons! Its taking 10 attempts and at least 1.5 kilos of almonds but at last something to show for it all!
Some tips I've learned from the BF himself - whether I wanted to or not!
1) Apparently, you don't need aged egg whites despite what all the recipes say. Gently stirring the egg whites over simmering water for 30 secs…

China!
At our next dinner we will be showing you how to make the ‘original’ pizza –aka Chinese stuffed pancakes!
The story goes that Marco Polo was so fond of these pancakes that when he went back to Italy he ordered his chefs to recreate them. However, they couldn’t figure out how to shape the dough with the stuffing inside – so what did they do?... they put it
on top!…

Hi Guys,
My boyfriend seems to be intent on spending money assigned for the mortgage on ground almonds, icing sugar and eggs to make the 'perfect' macaron (or macaroon). 6 attempts and no nearer so far. Any good tried and tested recipes out there? The ones he's made look like mini portraits of the elephant man!
